About Itawamba County, Mississippi...


Itawamba County is located in the North-Eastern Portion of Mississippi on the border with Alabama. Itawamba County was formed on February 9, 1836 and was named for the Chickasaw leader Levi Colbert, who was also known as Itawamba.


The county seat is Fulton. Fulton is the birthplace of Vernon Presley, Elvis' father. Tammy Wynette was also born nearby.


The county has a total area of 540.42 square miles of which 532.31 square miles is land and 8.11 square miles (1.50%) is water. The population recorded in the 1840 Federal Census was 5,375. The 2010 census recorded 23,401 residents in the county.


Neighboring counties are Tishomingo County (northeast), Franklin County, Alabama (east), Marion County, Alabama (southeast), Monroe County (south), Lee County (west), and Prentiss County (northwest). Communities in the county include Fulton, Mantachie, Tremont, Beans Ferry, Bounds Crossroads, Carolina, Clay, Dorsey, Evergreen, Fairview, Frog Level, Peaceful Valley, Rara Avis, Ryan's Well, Sandy Springs, Tilden, Van Buren, Yale, and Reedsville.
